In Charlotte, Governor Stein Celebrates North Carolina’s Economic Strength

Today Governor Josh Stein visited Charlotte to highlight North Carolina’s continued work to create jobs and expand opportunity. The Governor attended ribbon-cutting events for Daimler Truck Financial Services’ new North American headquarters and Capital Group’s new East Coast operations hub and joined the PhRMA State Advocacy National Meeting, showcasing investments in the state’s financial services and life sciences industries.

Keeping North Carolina a Top State for Business

“Charlotte is the country’s second-largest financial center, and people want to be part of what we’re building,” said Governor Josh Stein. “These investments from Daimler Truck Financial Services and Capital Group will bring nearly 1,000 new good-paying jobs for North Carolina’s top-tier financial services workforce.”

Governor Stein joined DTFS for the ribbon-cutting at its new North American headquarters in Ballantyne. The company will invest nearly $8 million in its new headquarters, bringing 276 jobs to Mecklenburg County.

DTFS provides financing and leasing solutions for Daimler Truck North America, one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in the world, producing Freightliner trucks, Western Star trucks, and Thomas Built Buses. For more than 50 years, the company has offered custom financing, leasing, and insurance options for its commercial vehicle customers that include owner-operators, fleet owners, and municipalities. DTFS’s new headquarters in North Carolina will consolidate the current offices from Michigan and Texas into 60,000 square feet for its administration, HR, and financial operations.

Governor Stein also attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Capital Group’s new East Coast operations hub. The 600 new jobs created by the project will bring an anticipated annual payroll impact of more than $116 million to the region. The project is expected to grow the state’s economy by more than $5 billion over the next 12 years.

Charlotte is the second-largest banking center in the United States. North Carolina’s rapidly growing financial services industry has expanded by 25% since 2019. North Carolina has consistently been ranked a Top 2 State for Business for the past six years. This year, North Carolina was ranked by CNBC the #1 state for the economy, the #2 state for business, and the #3 state for workforce. Since taking office last year, Governor Stein has announced nearly 47,000 good-paying jobs and nearly $33 billion in new investment from business projects across the state.

Highlighting North Carolina as a Life Sciences Powerhouse

Later in the day, the Governor attended the PhRMA State Advocacy National Meeting to highlight North Carolina’s leadership in the life sciences industry.

“North Carolina is a top 3 state for life sciences because of our talented workforce, strong research institutions, and commitment to innovation,” said Governor Josh Stein. “As our life sciences industry continues to grow, we are making sure North Carolinians have the skills they need to gain access to good-paying jobs and companies have the talent they need to grow here.”

North Carolina is one of the top three states for pharmaceutical employment and home to the top bio-manufacturing hub in the nation. The state’s life sciences industry supports more than 210,000 jobs and generates $82 billion in annual economic activity. More than 860 life sciences companies operate in North Carolina, with 2,500 additional companies supporting the industry and its specific needs. Last month, Governor Stein announced STERIS plc, a leading health care company, will invest $600 million in a new manufacturing and distribution Chemistries Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Sanford, bringing 335 jobs to Lee County. Since 2019, employment in North Carolina’s life sciences sector has grown more than 2.5 times faster than the rest of the private sector.

Governor Stein is committed to investing in the state’s workforce by strengthening pathways that close skills gaps and meet evolving economic development needs. Since the Governor took office last year, the state has enrolled nearly 6,000 new apprentices and pre-apprentices in high-demand industries like life sciences, connecting people to good jobs with good wages that meet the state’s workforce needs. Governor Stein signed into law a budget that strengthens Propel NC, helping community colleges prepare students for careers in high-demand fields, and expands ApprenticeshipNC, building more apprenticeships and youth apprenticeships across all industries.
